All Stanford dissertations and theses are listed in SearchWorks. Most Stanford dissertations written between 1989-2009 are available as PDFs from ProQuest.
Since fall 2009, many Stanford PhDs have opted to submit their dissertations electronically. Unless the student chose to place the dissertation under an embargo, electronic dissertations are available to view as PDFs via the dissertation’s catalog record in SearchWorks.

An author has the option to delay the release of a dissertation through ProQuest and to search engines outside of Stanford and other third party distributors. Release delay options are: 6 months, 1 year, or 2 years. Under an embargo, the dissertation will be available to those who have access to the Stanford University Libraries.
During online submission process, the dissertation author signs the Stanford University Thesis and Dissertation Publication License. By accepting the terms of this agreement, you are granting Stanford the non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable right to reproduce, distribute, display and transmit the dissertation. The full text of the agreement is included.
The dissertation is the final requirement for the PhD degree. The research required for the dissertation must be of publishable quality and a significant contribution in a scholarly field. The dissertation is evidence of the candidate’s proficiency and future potential in research.
Thesis formatting at Stanford has become checked only through the Primary Advisor (who takes tacit responsibility when pressing the “Accept” button following online submission). We are able to now bypass a few of the archaic specifications of ProQuest Dissertation Publishing (Ann Arbor), who’ve been serving the requirements of microfiche storage.
