The CMS Doctoral Prize was inaugurated to recognize outstanding performance by a doctoral student who graduated from a Canadian university in the preceding year (January 1st to December 31st). The first award was presented in 1997. As of 2021, the award is renamed the CMS Blair Spearman Doctoral Prize in honour of the late mathematician.
This award is given annually to the best doctoral dissertation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) from a Canadian institution. The award comes with a commemorative plaque, a cash prize, free registration to the Canadian AI conference, and a 30-minute talk at the conference.
